Impact of Advertising on consumer behaviour

Impact of Advertising on consumer behavior

In today’s hyper-connected world, advertising is present everywhere. From flashy billboards on highways to sponsored and collaborative posts on Instagram, brands constantly try to gain our attention and shape our purchasing decisions. The impact of these advertisements is quite a lot on our minds, influencing not only what we buy or not, but also the perceptions of products and brands in our minds.

Since the term ‘advertising’ was coined, at its core, it was a communication medium for the dissemination of information. But over the years, advertising’s agenda has shifted from sharing facts to laying propaganda. It no longer shapes our minds to think what we need but to think what we want. Through carefully crafted messages, advertisers seek to evoke desires, provoke emotions, and ultimately the drive to act. Whether it’s showcasing the pros and cons of a new gadget or the benefits of drinking yogurt, advertising influences our perspectives and choices in subtle yet significant ways.

One of the primary steps by which advertising influences consumer behavior is by creating brand awareness. Through repeated marketing and advertising, consumers become familiar with the brands and their services. This familiarity can help easily build trust and loyalty, leading consumers to choose their brands over unfamiliar competitors. For example, a catchy jingle like Nirma’s “washing powder Nirma” or a memorable slogan like LIC’s “Jeevan ke saath bhi, Jeevan ke baad bhi” can hang on to consumer’s minds, making them more likely to consider that product or brand when making purchasing decisions.

Moreover, advertising’s USPs also play a crucial role in shaping the preferences and attitudes of consumers. By highlighting the USP, being Unique Selling Points, and placing the products in the consumer’s desirable ways, advertisers can direct how consumers perceive their offerings. For instance, A skincare ad featuring a flawless model, or a famous actress may hold on to the minds of the customers to associate the product with their beauty and confidence, provoking them to buy it in hopes of achieving similar results.

Furthermore, Advertising holds the will to create and reinforce social and cultural norms. Advertisements portray the ideal lifestyles and standards of living; that one should live by. By doing this, they subtly promote and suggest buying their products for the desirable results or so. By aligning their products with people’s interests and ideals, advertisers tap into the consumer's desirable needs and drive them to fulfill their societal expectations through their purchasing choices.

However, there are critics as well to the impacts of advertising. Some say, that advertising manipulates and persuades consumers by pinning out their insecurities and wants. Advertisers use methods of emotional appeals, celebrity endorsements, and exaggerated claims to shape consumer behavior, which might lead to impulsive purchasing decisions.

Moreover, In this digital era, advertising has become a bit too intrusive as well as personalized, with targeted ads tracking consumer’s online activities and knowing their preferences. For instance, we all must have experienced talking and scrolling for a product, say a shoe, and receiving ads for footwear the next day. While these personalized ads can be effective in reaching a specific handful of target audiences at the same time they also raise concerns about the system's privacy and data protection.

In conclusion, advertising’s impact on consumer behavior is vital, being related to shaping our mindset, our tastes, and choices or purchasing decisions. Surely, advertising is a powerful tool for brands to reach and engage customers, but it also raises questions that are important regarding manipulation, propaganda, privacy, and influence. As consumers, it's essential to recognize the influence and power that advertising holds with a critical eye and maintain control over our choices.
